Shit I'm loving lately №4
a fortnightly round-up of what to watch, read, eat, listen to, and get absolutely obsessed with this week - curated by yours truly
Are we reaching peak acknowledgment of “corporate nonsense”? by Money with Katie was fucking brilliant. Katie writes with such incisive humour about the complete absurdity of corporate life that it made me want to burn my Macbook and never take on another corporate job again. This article really makes you realise how much of modern work is performative and this killer of an article will resonate heavily with anyone who's ever sat through a meeting about…planning another meeting. (Side note: Katie’s weekly money newsletter is another new find of mine and a secondary recommendation—girl can write).
I’m always on the hunt for more book recommendations and so you’d better believe this list of 20 inspiring books by female leaders will be forming the basis of my reading list next year. There’s no limit to the amount of biographies I could read about women and their experiences. Others I’ve loved recently are I’m Glad My Mom Died, Notes To Self, and A Life’s Work.
Why Are We Buying Clothes For Lives We Don't Have? by was a welcome and blunt reminder that I really need to stop scrolling H&M’s website for sassy new clothing that would sit ignored my wardrobe while I gleefully lounge around in leggings and big jumpers for 95% of the week. A great read for anyone who’s husband has ever said to them “Why do you keep buying clothes, you don’t go anywhere.” I feel seen.
Okay, this is going to be a marmite recommendation but here it comes anyway: Katie Price on Louis Theroux. I’ve always quite liked Katie Price—not least because anyone who manages to stay *relatively* famous for so long with no talent whatsoever is worthy of some respect. There’s something refreshingly blunt and honest about her that I can’t help but warm to. Her and Louis could not be more different in every single possible way, which made for a surprisingly interesting listen.
Jessie J singing My Heart Will Go On on a reality show from over six years ago. Yes, I know this is probably my roguest recommendation yet, but I feel compelled to include it because I comfort-watch this video like it’s going out of fashion (the top comment is literally “Just coming back for my monthly viewing of this masterpiece.”) Every few weeks, I’ll whack it on and cry my eyes out at how INSANELY beautiful this song is and how IMPECCABLY PERFECTLY Jessie J sings it. I just cannot even with it.
I also loved Louis Theroux’s episode with Barry Keoghan. Having been politely obsessed with Barry since first seeing him in Dunkirk a few years ago (was anyone else just immediately and inexplicably attracted in a violent way to his general aura!?), this interview cemented the fact that, on top of being an insanely talented actor, he’s clearly a pretty top bloke as well. The way he speaks honestly about his childhood, relationships, hate for social media, drive for acting and more—all while remaining personable, funny, and down-to-earth was a delight. Really worth a listen. Long live Bazza.
Matt and I have just finished Rivals and, at pains of sounding like 99% of the world right now, have been pleasantly surprised at how absolutely bloody brilliant it is. It’s like pure escapism. Smutty as fuck. Incredible cinematography. Great sex. Delightful outfits. The most envy-inducing homes. Gorgeous casting in that you recognise pretty much every cast member from something else you’ve watched. It’s just so much yes wrapped up into each one hour episode. I didn’t think Matt would continue on past episode one with me, but he has. Gleefully, some might say. I’m already frantically Googling when the fuck season 2 is coming out and what other shows I can watch to fill the void left behind.
We also watched Strange Darling the other day, a horror film which isn’t really a horror film but is a romping great time nonetheless. I’ve been trying to satiate my horror thirst after seeing Heretic at the cinema on Halloween and being sadly disappointed in everything about it other than Hugh Grant’s surprisingly astute ability at playing a villain. Again, Strange Darling didn’t quite scratch the terror itch, but what a wonderfully quirky little piece of cinema it was. Great for anyone who likes more arty films. I really enjoyed it.
Munchies Ice Cream Cookie Dough. These things are like *actual* crack. I have to physically restrain myself from eating the entire pack in one sitting.
The entire new Pro Artist Collection from No7 but mostly the lipsticks. THE LIPSTICKS!
This adorable little interview between Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon following the Sao Paulo GP.
This snuggly electric blanket now that it’s officially Cold Season.
The fact that Barry Keoghan is going to be in the new Peaky Blinders movie because the only thing in this world sexier than Cillian Murphy is Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan in the same place.
📚 Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart
📽️ Slow Horses season 2+3 (given we rather liked season one and, ofc, Jack Lowden 😍)
📚 The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
I love these little lists. I’ve just written one of my own which I hope to make a weekly occurrence! Please check it out if you are that way inclined!
I love your bio - going to bed early and obsession about walking! Can you say more about walking? I read Mason Curry’s DAILY RITUALS which was mostly a list of procrastinators, many of which used drugs and/or alcohol to get through writing, creative work and life. But all of the good ones, and not crazy-sounding ones walked.
